in Harker Heights, Texas, just a few miles from where I live.
I filled out a form one day at an internet bike buying service,
and a few days later, a guy named Dave Bigley called me at home
while I was at work. I didn't think anything of the message my
wife took ... it said, "Dave
Bigley, something about a motorcycle."
Well, I didn't know any Dave Bigley and I wasn't serious about
buying a bike either ... not yet anyway.
I called Dave back about a week later
and he told me he got my name from Cycle-by-tel and then I remembered
and it all was a little clearer. Dave told me over the phone
that a Custom 883 Sportster was coming in at the end of March
and it almost made me jump when he said it was -- I hate to have
to say it again, but here goes ... "Cobalt Blue Pearl."
Price of the bike -- $7,495, (MSRP is $6,995) and with tax, title,
license and all that jazz: $8,083. That 883 Custom I saw in Miami
-- an unbelievable $10.5 K, cash out the door. Where I live (170
miles South of Dallas, TX), the bike increases in price gradually
as you go North to Dallas. People in Dallas actually buy their
bikes at Bell County H-D. One guy I met from Dallas at BCHD told
me he paid $4,000 less for his Softail Standard than what he
could touch one for in Dallas. I did buy a pair of H-D motorcycle
gloves at Dallas H-D, though, with gel in the palms to decrease
vibration ... they gave my son a lolly-pop while I was there
and told me he was a good boy.
So ... the base price was $7,495; then
tax, title, license and all that jazz, $8,083; then I bought
a 6-year extended warrenty for $829.00; and with the engine oil
cooler, Screamin' Eagle pipes; braided brake lines, high-flow
air cleaner, DynaJet jet kit, and labor, my final bike price
came to around $9,780.
