My insurance quote from Progressive http://www.progressive.com
came by fax. They quoted me $392 for one year, and that sounds
good to me since I'm financing the bike, but I also haven't checked
anywhere else and that's what I plan to do this week.
Keep it out of the ditch ...
I spent my lunch time March 22, getting
insurance quotes and can now give a little advice -- Shop around.
The lowest quote I received was $238 for a full year. The highest
-- $698. I don't care why there's a big difference, because it
just simply doesn't matter, because I'll go with what is the
lowest and best. The $238 quote was from a Progressive Agent
in town. I cared why the Progressive quote by phone was about
$160 more than the one the agent gave me in person. She told
me the people who give quotes over the phone are "data entry
personnel," who don't know anything
about insurance. She told me she'd been selling insurance for
over 20 years and was going to show me how to spend my money
wisely. My advice: Go over the different coverages and know what
they are for. I saved the $160 because I decided I didn't need
some personal medical coverage because I already have such coverage
where I work that will cover me if I need it. The insurance lady
agreed. She also told me my coverage would be less because I
own my own home; it would be locked in a garage overnight; I
took my motorcycle safety course; and will be joining a motorcycle
club. All of these things qualify you for discounts, and there's
more, even, so you have to ask. Not having any traffic tickets
or accidents for 3 years is in your favor too. She showed me
a quote she did on a guy in his mid-twenties who bought a sportbike:
the quote was nearly $2,000 already, then Progressive searched
the guy's driving record and found 3 speeding tickets during
1998 -- this made it jump to over $3,200 for one year. What average
guy can afford that? He might as well just take a picture of
that bike, hang it on the garage wall, then sell it and forget
about motorcycling for a long time...

I also stopped by the insurance agent
again today to drop off a police report from an accident I had
with my car during April 1998. Fault was shared in the accident,
and the lady said she'd speak positively about me to Progressive,
but she said her experience tells her everything will be OK,
meaning they won't give me a higher rate because of the accident.
I took her the police report so there wouldn't be any question
about fault -- that's why they call them accidents.
